Long Beach Crit "So my gut says to Attack"

So this is one of the races I do well in. I've take top 10, 3 times in the last 3 years. So I was pretty excited to do this race. There was a good size field 70 to 80 riders. The 1st 4 or 5 laps I stayed in the very front. But nothing went immediately. So I sat securely at the back for the 1st 20min that is usually when the next opportunity to get away is. So at 20min I moved back up pretty easily and stayed in the top 20 riders and watched for the move. There was a really good headwind on the back stretch and every thing that started to form at the front and looked good was pulled back quickly so with 16 min to go it was going to be a field sprint. This is something I have not worked on much this year so I wasn't quite sure what my plan was. So I sat near the back trying to decide what I was going to do. Then the lap count down started and right at 2 to go I saw my train heading for the front so I latched on and within 30 seconds and 2 corners I was 10th, then a surge came which I judged correctly and I was 5th. So the set up is looking perfect but riders 1 and 2 are running out of steam and were crossing the start/finish line with 1 to go. So my gut says Attack, but I hesitated and did not commit and the next surge comes from both sides and the 2 guys in front of me sit up. So I can't go with the surge cause I am boxed in and the in 30 seconds and 2 corners I'm 70th. So I went up the outside hard and got boxed in at about 50th and then into the last corner I passed 20 25 guys. So I ended up somewhere between 25th and 30th.... Next time listen to your gut!

Well I am Starting to feel fast. I have been rppin it up at the local practice race. I took 3rd last night after a very hard race that 30 of the starting 50 shelled off the back. I made one of the big moves the week before which got caught but only because the pros chased us down . So above is a picture of how I feel all 6'1" , 155 lbs (2lbs of hair included) of me.

Barrio Logan Gran Prix

Well this is one of the fastest and hardest Criteriums of the year. I have only finished one time in the last four years. It is a figure eight course with potholes in all the corners. The frontside of the course is uphill all the way to the start/finish line. So I sat in top 30 for the 1st 15 minutes of the race it was really scary. The field was all over the rode and running into eachother I was fight for position and loosing a lot of places (they were also crashing "Hooray Crashing!!") so I was yoyoing up and back. This started to weigh on me so I went to the back and sat in. The pace was really fast on the climb and every lap I was sure I was gonna come off, but every lap as we neared the top I was still there and passing people. There were 2 more crashes both I was behind and the 1st of these 2 brought me to a screeching halt and I missed the curb. They gave me a free lap and I was thrown back into the field. With 3 laps to go they crashed again and I chased back on. With 1 to go I was toast so I sat up and rolled it in. Overall this Race was amazing. I finished and my form is realy coming around. I wish I had been more aggressive but my legs and mind did not have it in them toda. Tommarrow is another day and another race so praise the Lord.

Torrance Crit 4/19

Well, Thursday I went home from work with a cold Friday I slept till 1100 am and Saturday Veronica Motorpaced me off the back of the car (27 mph 20 min) while I sneezed uncontrollably. Sundays race I started at the front driving the pace and following every thing the first 20 min. I was fast and everyone else was attacking so I couldn't go off the front early on.
Before the race I saw another racer (Casey) from last year who was incredibly strong. I wasn't sure If he was racing with us or in the category above us and his teammates who were in the race were not sure Either. We had a really big group and since I was on the front I hadn't seen him yet. So, I drifted back in the group a bit to see who was there and sure enough he was hiding back there. So the next 15 min I marked him at on point we were both in the to 20 but he was on the outside of the field and I was on the inside. The slowed and the outside accelerated. I saw the whole race unfolding and I was stuck behind the slow guys so I started yelling that's the move its happening its happening. The field let it go (3 guys) for 1 lap and then as I was getting to the front they started chasing. The field got just within reach of them and then sat up except the 2 guys that bridged across(now its a 5 up race). So now I was angry I missed the move and it was a good one. I missed the bridge and it added some good horsepower. So I went animal style growling out of the saddle spitting at 30/35mph for an entire lap (1mile). I fractured the entire field and made it onto the back of the break. So as I am pulling into the back of the break I'm going 33 and there going 28 so I hit my breaks (very bad decision) They punched it and I was dropped from the break. So 5 guys came by who were in the field and I got in 6th place and they finish the job of bringin the break back. So the whole effort had me tosted so I sat in and tried to recover. My effor tpayed off though because Casy trye dtwice mor to get away and I yelled at guys in the fild and they reeled him back for me. The last time they caught him I attacked and did not get very far. I finished in the field with barely any energy 35th or 36th. Not bad for being sick as a dog.

Hunnikens Crit 4/12

So I didn't finish today but I tryed to win. I went hard from the gun me and Nate O neil got away on the 2nd lap the field just let us go. Nate wouldn't work so we let the fild catch us and I got back into the front (top7). I followed all the moves and I and on one occasion heard Gods voice till me to Go so I moved real hard and maintained my position in the field because there was surge right as I moved, the field sat up and then God said go again and so I attacted with all my might and when I was sure I had gotten clear o fthe field I looked back to see who was with me. It was Paul Dessualt who said "keep going Jesse, Faster". He took a really hard pull and when it was turn to pull I looked down at my speedometer and we were goin 35mph into the headwind (Ouch!). The field did not like are move and put an end to it quickley. When the field catches you your supposed to jump back in well if you wait to long to jump your at the back and that is exactly what I did. At fiesta Island when you jump back in there are 100 riders you have alot of time. In this race there was only 35 to 40 I waiting 30 seconds to long and got dropped GAME OVER!!!

Racing strategy

So my new strategy is to race the way I am tring like a wild animal. I will never win if I don't take risks. I don't want to finish anymore I want to win and if I don't finish cause I'm trying to win "that is OK".

Speed training

So all I have been doing lately is speed drills. These consist of finding a flat section of road and trying to hold over 30mph for as long as possible (1 1/2 min is the rec) or accecelerating till I hit 36 or 37mph and then doing it again and again till I cant do no more. One of the other things I have been doing is the practice crit at fiesta my goal has been to attack the field of 120 riders over and over again. So first I accelerate up 33/36 mph and hold for 40 seconds if some one goes with my attack then they pull through and we stay away till they catch us. The next part is the hard part after they catch I try to get back in the front of the group andgo with the next attack off the front. This puts your body into serious oxigen debt and hurts soooo bad. I call all this riding like an animal.

I am fast

Murrietta Gran Prix

well today was a bust, but here is how it went. I sat in the front and followed moves the first 15 minutes. Both the moves Ice followed did not stick. One of the corners was really scared and I went into to wide almost riding directly into the curb. I hit the breaks and then was at the back of the field. The back of the field kept slowing in the corners and I was sprinting out of every one. This started to wear on me I came off the back at one point and then chased back on. As soon as I was in the field they slowed into the next corner and I was gapped off again. I would say over all I didn't feel comfortable in the field the entire time. I eventually came off for good and that was the day. Now its time to rest and get my mind ready for tommarow.

Imperial Valley Criterium Feb 9th

The 2nd race of the year went much better than the 1st. I ate really well as you can see by my photo log (so no ribbing about my diet people). The race I entered only had 21 participants. This is not a good thing if you want to hide and do no work. Luckily I was feeling strong and that was not my plan.
So, the race started off hard with many attacks. Groups of 4 and 5 guys kept trying to get away, I sat in 6th and 7th place following everything but not getting on the front. Right at about 20 minutes Jorge attacked the field solo and we all let him go. He usually tries this and always comes back eventually. The field started chasing and one of the guys doing a lot of the work (Shane Lawler) rolled away and bridged across to Jorge. It was now a 2 up race with 22 minutes to go. The field backed off the pace for quite some time and one of Shanes teammates (Justin) was blocking for him. But like always they brought the speed back up and started chasing again. One of the guys (Black Jack) doing a lot of the work on the front won the race right before ours and I was trying to stay close to him in case he got away. Black Jack finally did slip away with another rider but I missed the move and my legs were loosing there snap. So if I was nearby I don't know if I could have gone with the move. At this point there are now 5 laps to go and the field was backing off the pace again. Right before 4 to go I was moving to the front of the field with a lot of momentum and the entire field was slowing down; so as soon as I was at the front I attacked in hopes of bridging across to the 2nd group on the rode. I only stayed away for half a lap and then they started chasing me really hard so I let them catch me and got back in the group. The next 2 laps were very static which gave me an opportunity to recover from the flyer I took.
With 1 lap to go I decided who I was going to follow (Jan pronounced Yan) in the sprint for 6th. Jan consistently has a good lead out and is always near the front at the end. So I am sitting at the back on his wheel just waiting. When my friend and teammate yells Jesse move up. So, I didn’t listen to my instincts and moved up on the inside. Just as I did that Jan moved up on the outside. So I backed off and went around the back of the field and jumped towards Jan. Right before I got to him 2 other riders slid over onto his wheel. So now I am 4th. Going into the 2nd to last corner I lost 2 places going into the last corner the rest of the riders slid left and I was in the gutter at the back. So I took 10th in the field and 15th overall. It was a great race and the best result I have ever had in February. I am getting really strong and am really excited for this season.

Thank you all for your prayers

The Flu and My 1st Race

Will its finally begun. I am now putting on the jersey and bumping into other guys on the road. But before I share about that lets talk about the flu.
I had 12 solid weeks of training and I was getting stronger. I was even Setting new PRs (Personal records). I had a rest week and then all of a sudden the flu hit me 3 days in bed 5 days out of work. Wash your hands people, wash your hands. So this was my first week back after being sick and I felt like a slug. Unfortunately for me it was also the first race weekend. It actually gets worse. My first race of the year was on super bowl Sunday and it poured rain all day. Not to mention that the race was put on by my team so I spent the day outside in the elements running registration.
I got a really good warm-up (on the Kelly Trainer) in before my race and my legs felt decent. However, one of the hard efforts on the trainer helped me to see that my lungs aren't entirely recovered after my flu from 7 days ago. So I started the race and stayed in the front for the 1st 2 laps my legs felt great but my lungs felt bad and I decided to quit so that I wouldn't give myself pneumonia. 40 degrees pouring rain and burning lungs sound pretty foolish. So I live to race another day. I am racing next Sat in the imperial valley. I appreciate all your guys prayers.

Love in Christ
